"Paperback Writer" made the second largest leap to number one in the American charts. It debuted on the Hot 100 at number 28 during the week of June 11th, 1966, moved to 15 and then pole-vaulted to number one on June 25th. The only single to have made a bigger leap was by [surprise] the Beatles with "Can't Buy Me Love"!
"PW" was their 12th American number one having been released as a single on May 30th, 1966 together with "Rain". It knocked over "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones and stayed at number one for two weeks before showing Frank Sinatra some respect and succumbing to his "Strangers In The Night".
