An early version of the lyric, composed by McCartney, reads "She was just seventeen, and
she was never a beauty queen". Lennon persuaded him that that particular line was awful.
This was the first song on the first Beatles album.
John Lennon performed this song live on stage at Madison Square Garden (in New York City), together with Elton
John, Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, 1974 (singing in unison with Elton, rather than
providing lower harmonies as he did while he sang it with the Beatles). It was his last live performance for a paying
audience.
Paul McCartney has included this song on his stage performances during the late 80s/early
90s.
