A small, shallow, single-headed drum into whose wooden shell loosely hanging "jingles" (circular metal disks) are inserted, usually in pairs. The instrument is played by either:
(a) striking the head with knuckles, fingers, closed fist, back of the hand, or player's knee;
(b) grasping the shell firmly and shaking it, which produces a roll of the "jingles";
(c) rubbing the thunb along the edge of the head, which gives a tremolo of the "jingles";
(d) or by playing near the rim with fingers or sticks.
